Ex-New College Telford student David Wright MP challenges students to 'think like a politician'
Categories: Press Releases
After touring the whole site and taking a look at the latest changes to the college, New College Telford students Lauren Curtis and Olivia Bowen asked David Wright MP how he thought it had changed since his time at the college.
David Wright MP said: “I very much enjoyed seeing how New College Telford has developed since I attended. I can see how the new layout is more beneficial for students - and the focus on developing the skills that employers are looking for is more important than ever.”
Lauren Curtis said: “From how David described the college previously I can see how the new facilities have really brought the students together as one community. It was great to see David Wright MP and our A Level Politics students engaged in some passionate conversations about politics.”
David said: “A Level Politics just wasn’t an option when I was a student here and I never thought about it at the time. I really recommend - that as today’s students and tomorrow’s potential politicians - you watch the news, put yourselves in Politicians’ shoes and think about the decisions you would have to make as a politician.”
David continued: “I didn’t set out to become an MP, but I’ve now been a Member of Parliament for 11 years. I really enjoy the job - students wanting to pursue a career in politics should give it everything they’ve got and enjoy it. I’m extremely proud to be representing my home town in Parliament.”
Garry Phillips, Principal and CEO, New College Telford said: “It is really encouraging for all our students and especially the Politics students to be able to talk directly with our local MP about his unique experiences and perspectives on his role. We are very grateful to David Wright MP for sharing his time and insights with our current students and helping to inspire them, as a positive role model, to think about their career choices.”
