Luby Cunningham, Artist in Residence at New College Telford said: “My work has been exhibited around the world, but this is my first opportunity to exhibit a collection of work since I’ve been working at New College, Telford and the response has been very encouraging.”
Luby Cunningham’s paintings are a journey through landscapes and memory. They are inspired by places and things and expressed on different layers, from landscape-scale colours and forms to microscopic details and texture. On looking closer, the viewer can discover different communities of paintings within each artwork.
Luby Cunningham continued: “I’ve always been fascinated by the making of a painting and the diversity of techniques and materials. I use a wide variety of materials which can take on a life of their own so that all the marks, colours and textures become significant. I like the sense of movement, change and accident which happens organically.”
“This way I paint is very much influenced by the Abstract Expressionists and by an extraordinary experience I had when I was eight years old. I was living in New York State at the time and visited the MoMA(Museum of Modern Art) in New York City. The Pollock and Rothko paintings blew me away. Even though I didn’t know anything about the paintings I had an intuitive understanding and knew then I wanted to be a painter.”
Talking about her Artist in Residence role at New College Telford, Luby Cunningham said: “As Artist in Residence at New College Telford I support students across the area of art and design to produce a diverse collection of artwork. I provide them with an opportunity and freedom to explore ideas, techniques and materials. I have my own studio space within the department to continue with my own practice and develop my work. I work in an accessible, open space alongside the students so that they can see me work and ask questions about the techniques and the materials I use. It’s a place where they feel they can bounce ideas and discuss different approaches to their work.”

Luby Cunningham exhibited at the original Turner prize for British landscape painters at The Mall Galleries in London, has featured on the ITV television show A Brush With Fame and been Artist in Residence at New College Telford for four years. During her time at New College Telford she has spoken about her Residency at The British Museum, London and has had work commissioned by television personalities and private companies in the UK, Hong Kong, Italy, Poland, Australia, Mexico and New York.
