Outdoor adventure students' expedition challenge

Categories: Press Releases

Over 40 students on Level 3 Outdoor Adventure courses are carrying out their planning and research for the final major expedition activity of their course. The 8-day expedition across Ireland starts on 29 June 2012.

Outdoor Education Course Leader, Julian Dwane, said: “The expedition not only develops the skills that the students have been taught, but they have to rely on themselves and on each other. They finish with a real sense of achievement and satisfaction.”

Julian Dwane continued: “Our Outdoor Education teachers are all experienced specialists who have worked around the world and they offer a wide variety of activities, trips and residentials. This means that students studying with us get an extraordinary personal development opportunity.”

New College Telford provides a wide range of outdoor adventure activities for Outdoor Education students including climbing, scrambling, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, coasteering, orienteering, abseiling and skiing.

Outdoor Adventure course student, Tom Talbot, said: “You have to trust yourself and the people you’re with when you’re doing an outdoor activity so your confidence grows and you really get to know each other. I work part-time in a leisure centre and it’s given me a real step up.”

Graham French, Course Tutor said: “The practical activities throughout the courses do bring out students’ planning, teamwork and leadership skills. These also add to each student’s CV and help to provide a deep understanding of how to plan and work together successfully.”
