AS/A2 Communication Studies

The course is designed to enable you to:  

  • Relate your own life experiences to contemporary academic debates
  • Examine cultural aspects of communication
  • Give you a thorough grounding in the analysis and understanding of cultural products and cultural practices

 

Is it for me? 

This course suits those who enjoy class discussion and debates, have a flair for English, enjoy working as part of a team and wish to develop their skills to deconstruct texts. You should enjoy the challenge of group presentations, as well as research and discussion. Assessment is predominantly exam based. 

 

What's involved?

Understanding Communication and Culture 

This unit will assess your understanding of key concepts within communication and culture. You will examine the nature of culture, definitions of culture, high and popular culture as well as communication issues such as verbal and non verbal communication.

 

The Individual and Contemporary Culture: Portfolio 

Create a portfolio of work which investigates communication culture and the individual. You will also be required to explore cultural products and practices as well as presenting your own culture. 

 

Communicating Culture 

This unit includes a close study of a cultural site such as spaces and places, fictions or objects of desire. The unit also examines the study of dominant and alternative approaches to the understanding of communication and culture and theoretical concepts such as globalisation, consumerism and capitalism in relation to cultural products.

 

Communication and Culture in Practice: Portfolio 

Focus on the construction and maintenance of our personal and social identities. The work examines the analysis of social and cultural ‘rituals’.

 
Progression 

Students who have previously studied Communication Studies have gone on to degrees such as Communication, Media and Culture and Sociology.
