BTEC National Award in Music Technology (Recording)

The course is designed to enable you to: 

Increase your knowledge and understanding of Music Production software

Develop and apply theory and practical skills through recording, editing and mixing sessions

Work effectively either as part of a team or as an individual

Display knowledge and understanding of specific terminology

Develop an understanding of studio and industry roles and the changing ways in which the music business operates

 
Is it for me? 

This course suits those who are seriously interested in developing their skills as music technologists. The course is taken over 2 years, is equivalent to one A level and is all coursework based.

 

What's involved?

Sound Recording Techniques 

You will learn Multi-tracking techniques including use of microphones, mixing recorded tracks and completing a stereo master recording

 
Computer Music Systems 

In this unit learn how to set up audio and midi hardware and how to combine internal and external sound sources. You will develop skills in understanding and using terminology and how to determine system requirements.

Creating a Music Product 

Produce recording sessions, edit and complete stereo mixes of multi-track recordings and master recordings to CD

 
Planning a Music Recording 

You will learn about studio and industry roles and how to plan and organise a recording session. The sessions will include financial considerations.

 
Listening Skills for Musicians 

You will be taught how to recognise musical and sonic components and listen to professional recordings as well as your own and identify sonic faults. You will learn how to understand instrumental and vocal resources in your acoustic environment

 
The Sound and Music Industry 

Learn about professional roles and career opportunities within the industry. You will study working patterns in the music business and learn how the areas of the sound and music industry relate to each other. You will study copyright, contracts and royalties.

Progression

Students have progressed on to higher education at various universities that offer BA Hons Music Production Courses. Students have also studied here at New College on our HNC/D Music Production courses.
